How to help someone quit smoking? What may be needed from you?

At one point almost all of us stop and think how to help someone quit smoking. The malign addiction is so widespread that it is hard to meet a person who has no smokers in his or her surrounding. You too are probably concerned with the same problem.

Of course, you cannot decide that somebody should stop smoking at once. Adult smokers are fully aware that their habit does not do them any good, yet they prefer to ignore the risks. But once they are determined about adopting a healthier lifestyle, you should know how to help someone quit smoking. In fact, you can help in a number of ways.

1. Quitting at once has proven to be ineffective, but gradual cutting on the number of cigarettes is a good way to go. However, do not presume that it is easy for a quitter. Their will power and honest efforts deserve your admiration and encouragement. Thinking of how to help someone quit smoking, consider this fact first.

2. Saying that you understand their cravings is of no use unless you have gone through the same experience in the past. Plain support and attending to the person’s needs is one of the main things when you decide how to help someone quit smoking.

3. There will be times, when the quitter feels he/she will not be able go through this. Your task is to boost the person’s confidence by appreciating him or her as well as showing your sincere faith in him/her.

4. In planning how to help someone quit smoking, do not miss out on small and simple things. Ensure the quitter is not tempted to have a cigarette again by keeping him/her in a non-smoking surrounding. Encourage more physical activity and spend more quality time with the person. Nagging or lecturing will not help at all.

5. Acknowledge their achievements. They may seem small to you, but they are really important for the quitter. Breaking an addiction is a painful process – the more reasons you have to be proud when your loved one succeeds.

You can invent ways and suggest different methods of quitting, but at the end of the day, you cannot do much against somebody’s will. So, it is important to realize that it is the quitter’s decision and determination that really works. You can only decide how to help someone quit smoking and pray that your efforts will bring the desired results.
